North Texas Lakes Rally 2009

Well, the time has come. The dates for the next annual North Texas Lakes Rally have just been announced! The rally will take place June 12th-14th in Waxahachie, Texas!

Last years rally was awesome and this year looks like it's going to be just as good! The schedule is posted here. We'll post more info when it comes in but until then, it might be a nice idea to pull out that old, smelly, broken down scoot and get it ready for Gymkhana! No use in laying down a perfectly good vintage!

See you at the rally!

Rockers vs. Mods: City Of Hate Rally

Rockers vs. Mods is going down March 21st-23rd 2009! The line up for this year rival all years past and the turn out looks like it will be massive!

This will be the third year for Rockers vs. Mods and you don't want to miss it! The rally schedule is posted online and special room rates at The Belmont Hotel have been arranged for all rally attendees.

If you're wondering where the Dallas got it's title "City of Hate" check out this NY Times article which might explain things. All history aside, you can be assured that the reception of scooterists and bikers alike will be as warm as the Texas summer. So don't be afraid to join in on the fun. Hope you see you there!

28th Annual International Motorcycle Show

November 14th at 4PM marked the opening of the 28th Annual Cycle World International Motorcycle Show. The motorcycles and scooters began to arrive by the thousands Friday evening. The Dallas Convention Center was packed with cycles from all over the state. And with major sponsors like Cycle World, Toyota, AMA, and Progressive, the show flow was packed with a ton of new custom bike builders and all the old favorites.

Of all the bikes on display there was a very small section called the "Scooter Pavilion" which was nothing more than a 100ft square area with a limited selection of scooters from vendors such as Sym, Genuine, Vespa, etc... The scooters were scarce and the larger displays that took place in other markets across the country from industry giants such as Piaggio, Aprilia, and Moto Guzzi were not seen at the Dallas show. Fortunately there were some cool motorcycles that made it worth it and the opportunity to take a closer look at some of my favorite late model Vespas such as the LXV which pays homage to the classic design of the 40's and 50's Vespas.

I was in a state of Shock and Awe when I saw some of the custom designs from some of the "smaller" manufacturers such as Victory. There is also the San Francisco based company (whose name escapes me) has managed to put together a custom cafe racer (Ala: MAD MAX) which gives the bike an incredible amount of character and style by making it look like a homemade racer born from the passion of a creative rider who's desire to ride is larger than his wallet!

We spent a couple hours exploring the convention floor and probably missed a ton but it was a fun experience and makes me thankful that the scooter still has so much room for growth and innovation which we all hope to see in the years to come.

Halloween At The Loft

Well, another Halloween has come and gone. The past few years have been a blast and this year was no exception! After some quick last minute decorating people started arriving at our loft, most of them dressed for the occasion. The "Dusk Of The Dead" party brought out some pretty awesome costumes...

Jonathan and LA came dressed as the Tooth Fairy and a female Ninja, while Rocio and Oliver came as a Mermaid and Fisherman! Lorena was a "Cat Burglar"... Priceless!

Houston and Emily showed up as the ever popular late 70's singing sensations Hall & Oates! We haven't seen them since their wedding so it was good to get together with them again.
Jeremy showed up as the mysterious Phantom Of The Opera while out neighbors Adam and Debbie joined forces as the miss-understood Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson!

In past years some of our fellow scooterists have participated in a Halloween festival parade and ride but I'm not sure there was much interest in that this year and most people opted out to enjoy just partying with their friends. We defiantly had a good time and thank everyone for coming over and partying with us! Maybe we'll have another party next year but in the meantime there's always New Years!

'Ya'll Can Go To Hell' Scooter Rally

Austin, TX:

Coming up the second weekend in November is the Austin "Ya'll Can Go To Hell, I'm-A-Goin' To Texas Scooter Rally" or YCGTHIAGTTSR for short! Put on by the PistonBroke Scooter Club the three day event is a vintage only rally but may allow for other scooters that "shift" as an exception.

The itinerary can be found on their website. Austin is beautiful all year round and this time of year with the cool weather is the best time to visit. See the PistonBroke SC website for more details.

An interesting Sunday afternoon

Scooting around last Sunday we noticed Elm Street was partially blocked off. Just so you know, Elm Street is a big 4 lane road that goes through the heart of downtown and leads to the intersection of Houston Street and the Texas School Book Depository where JFK was assassinated. To have this road block or partially blocked means something pretty big is going down. Well as we pull closer we see why. Apparently Carnival Cruise Lines was doing some big promotion joined with a Guinness Book of World Records attempt at the world's largest beach ball.

The beach balls were rolled from the top of one of the parking garages onto the street and then bounced off the hands of "those who've signed the release form". It was an amazing site. Totally pointless, exorbitant, and uncalled for, but hey, this is America!

Dallas Scooter Club: First Post

Hello scooterists! This is the first posting of the Dallas Scooter Club. Here's a little information about our club, who we are, and what we like to do. It's pretty simple, really.

The Dallas Scooter Club (DSC)is a place for local Dallas scooterists; who love vintage Vespa and Lambretta scooters to meet, hang out, and share their love for classic Italian design.

The purpose and goal of the DSC is to bring scooterists together to enjoy what we believe to be the core principals scootering: social interaction, touring, group rides, beer & food, art, wrenching, music,
and design.

Working with other scooter clubs in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area we hope to bring large groups of riders together for group events to build relationships and new interest in scooters, their cool-factor, beauty, and usefulness in the growing urban landscape of DFW.

We currently meet once a week for pizza and drinks on Wednesday nights at 7PM in downtown Dallas. The Ravenna Pizzera on the corner of Field and Main street. Come show off your vintage Vespa or Lambretta scooter and join us for a few drinks.
